Chicagoans Caitlin Barlow, Katy Colloton, Cate Freedman, Kate Lambert, Katie O’Brien, and Katie Thomas are The Katydids.
How did you guys meet?
Caitlin Barlow initially put the group together. She knew a lot of funny women named Kate or Katie and thought it would be funny to have an improv group where everyone had the same name. Besides being a team, all of us were very involved in the Chicago improv comedy scene.
Can only ladies with Katherine-derived names join the group? Would you accept a dude if he changed his name to Katrina?
Yes, in fact we have an honorary male member who has changed his name from Jeff to Kathy.
When you all get together, do you ever get confused about which “Kate” someone is talking about?
No, we use last names and nicknames.
What’s your creative process like?
We start by talking about completely unrelated topics for about 30 minutes. Then we dive into the task at hand by trying to make each other laugh.
How will the characters from your hit web series, Teachers, develop now that they’re getting their own TV Land pilot? Will you be taking them in any new directions?
The characters are essentially the same but, now, with a longer time frame, we’re able to delve more deeply. We can also see how the teachers relate to each other with more detail.
What was your craziest shoot?
In 2010 we shot a video that parodied the scene in Hook where Peter gets his imagination back during the food fight. The video is called “Bang-a-Rang.” It involved a lot of throwing frosting and shoving donuts in our mouths. It was a lot of fun.
Do any of you have any Obsessive Compulsive Disorders?
Not that particular disorder, but the full gamut of neurosis is represented in our group.
What’s your favorite TV family?
Favorite crime family?
The Whites of Albuquerque
Ever pull any good pranks?
We try to get each other all of the time.
Any embarrassing moments from your lives, individually or together, that you’d like to share?
You have to buy us a drink first.
