Heartwarming story of the day: a man noticed a pregnant woman standing and looking irritated, and offered her his seat in congress. Jennifer Leel, 36, mother of two, was uncomfortable while taking a tour of Capitol Building. Leel later reported she was uncomfortable because she was carrying 40 pounds of extra weight, had swollen ankles, and also because of how women are treated in our country.
Rep. Rick Crawford (R-AR) said “I really didn’t want to get up, but it looked like no one else was going to. I made eye contact with Paul Ryan several times, but I could tell he wasn’t budging.” After Crawford got up, Leel took the seat and changed the modern political landscape: she is a registered Democrat. Albio Sires (D-NJ) said “I was happy Crawford got up. For a second I thought I was going to have to do it and I was like ‘ugh’ not today. Later I found out she was a Democrat, which we really need right now.”
Only twenty percent of Congressional seats are held by women, all of whom were elected, seemingly unaware of the pregnancy seat loophole.
